Family Mediation Week at AWB Charlesworth

This week is Family Mediation Week.  The aim is to raise awareness of the benefits of mediation for couples who are separating and have issues relating to children and/or finances which need to be resolved.  The purpose of mediation is to encourage couples to make decisions together.

What is family mediation?

  • Family mediation is a process in which an independent, professionally trained mediator helps parties work out arrangements for children and finances where there is a dispute.
  • Mediators are impartial and will not take sides. They will listen to you and help you make choices and decisions about the best way forward for you and your family.
  • Mediation can help improve communication and allows you and your partner to stay in control. No-one will be forced to do or agree to anything against their wishes.  Unlike in a courtroom, both parties can agree to a solution rather than have a Judge decide for them.
  • Mediation is an alternative to the traditional Court/legal process and can be less stressful than going to Court, especially for children who are involved in proceedings. It is also cheaper than going through the Court process.
  • Agreements made in mediation can be made legally binding by a Court – you are likely to require assistance from a solicitor to achieve this.

The start of Family Mediation Week yesterday coincided with a Government announcement that an additional £1.3m would be spent on the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme.  Launched last year, the scheme has so far seen 4,400 vouchers used to resolve family disputes out of Court.  If you require further information regarding mediation or the voucher scheme, please do not hesitate to contact our Family Team. We offer an initial meeting for a fixed fee of £175+VAT.
