Helpful tools for managing your loved one’s Power of Attorney

Woman doing paperwork for Power of Attorney

Your loved one appointed you as an attorney. The Power of Attorney was registered. And in Section 5 of the LPA, your loved one approved of you looking after their financial matters even though they had mental capacity. They could look after their finances, but they were finding it a bit much, so they asked that you help, and their LPA allowed for this.

So, what now?

You are now the appointed attorney looking after your loved one’s financial affairs. Often this can be very simple. Direct debits continue to pay for monthly and annual bills, like rent, utilities, TV licence and so on. You may organise an online shop or ensure there is cash available for small bits of expenditure.

But if the situation is more complicated, if there are numerous pension pots or savings, and if you want to have peace of mind keeping track of income and expenditure, you might want to look at a Power of Attorney app or software. Here are two that we have come across:

What features do they offer?

Features differ on these and other apps, but some of the key advantages include:

  • You can allow family members view-only access, so that they can see exactly what is going on. This is especially useful if there are two or more attorneys acting on behalf of your loved one. You can clearly see what the other is doing.
  • You may need to pay tax on behalf of your loved one. These apps make the process of collecting the correct data and then reporting it simple.
  • In one place you can store all relevant documents so that everything is all together, from bills to bank statements, the actual PoA itself and all other necessary paperwork.
  • You may need to keep note of what needs to be done when, e.g. paying for car tax. Diary functions on these apps can help you keep on top of tasks.

We do not endorse these products. But we do suggest that you look at them and assess them for yourself. Why not utilise technology to take some of the burden and stress out of the process of being an attorney.
