Why a career in law? I’ve always been interested in how society works – the practice of law, how it affects our everyday lives is endlessly stimulating and property law is a very tangible reflection of law in action.
Education /route taken to becoming a lawyer: I took the “Traditional route” into law – University of Leicester for my law degree and then Chester College of Law and Articles with a firm in Leeds.
What are the highlights of your work? Getting the job done for my clients – I work in an area of law where both parties to a transaction usually want to achieve the same thing so it’s a question of working and steering towards a conclusion. It’s extremely satisfying to be part of delivering a finished “product” for a client.
What interests you about your specific area of law? I get to meet lots of people and am constantly learning from them which is hugely enjoyable. Day to day , I have to balance pulling together all the legal and technical strands of the job whilst being driven by the practical and commercial realities for our clients – constantly challenging but never boring.
What would be your ‘alternative’ profession if you were not a lawyer? A writer
Personal Interests/hobbies. I love being in the outdoors which I escape to whenever I can – cycling with friends, running, gardening or walking with my two dogs.
Previous jobs/careers. None other than the usual teenage and holiday jobs- I worked on a vegetable stall in Dewsbury market , a curtain shop, cleaned, worked in a magazine factory and John Menzies in Bradford Interchange before starting my articles.
An unusual fact! – not sure about unusual – I’ve completed 2 marathons – Berlin and Loch Ness. I went to ballet as a child and danced for the queen at Roundhay Park for her silver jubilee in 1977.
